Final Kitchen Design Overview

The new kitchen design was heavily influenced by the limitations of the existing space. The old freestanding gas cooker was problematic due to its low oven and inconvenient preheating. The family table was replaced by a breakfast area for two, which the client wanted to retain despite its current placement splitting the room and creating unused space. Additionally, the kitchen had to accommodate an external back door, a hot air heating system, a separate floor-standing hot water boiler, and two support nibs for the extension lintel.

Design Solutions:

  • Concealment and First Impressions: A front frame tall bank was designed to conceal the hot air heating system and support nib, providing a sleek initial look upon entering the room.
  • Integrated Storage and Appliances: Next to this, an integrated fridge freezer and oven bank were positioned, featuring a mix of tall and midi-height furniture to create a decorative shelved area. Base cabinets provided essential worksurface near the ovens.
  • Optimised Cooking Setup: The client’s cooking requirements were met with a single oven, combination microwave, and warming drawer placed at eye level for easier access. The floor boiler was hidden with a reduced depth cabinet, allowing the external door to open fully.
  • Breakfast Area and Layout Adjustment: To address the issue of the room being split, a new breakfast area was created. A false wall was built around the existing support nib, allowing the relocation of the hob and resolving the previous placement problem.
  • Sink and Washing Area: The sink and washer were placed under the window due to waste pipe outlets, and the dishwasher was positioned further down the run to avoid a congested corner.
  • Storage Solutions: Integrated waste bins and internal and external drawer cabinets provided ample storage. Solving the oven and hob placement allowed for a large, uninterrupted worksurface ideal for baking and preparation. Wall cabinets above made it convenient for loading and unloading the dishwasher and preparing drinks.
  • Aesthetic Choices: The design featured white high gloss doors paired with timber and concrete effect worktops, creating a subtle contrast while balancing cool and warm tones.
  • Budget-Friendly Quality: Hard-wearing, competitively priced products were chosen, including PP edged gloss lacquered doors and laminate worktops from a German manufacturer, ensuring the project stayed within budget without compromising quality.
