ROUND KITCHEN BURSTING WITH TEXTURE.
Customer Requirements
The kitchen was to be designed in a circular room with a true radius. We decided to design the layout of the kitchen based on a clockface – with a central working area in the middle and then 4 main pods at each quarterly point, one with the oven bank, one with the refrigeration, one with larder storage and one with the breakfast bar / social area. In-between these pods were the worksurface, sink and dishwashing areas.
To make the central work-space a big feature we used curved walnut veneered doors, in contrast to the concrete doors on the outer pods, and Corian worktop to contract with the Dekton elsewhere.
To pick-up on the curves we ended up with a walnut breakfast bar that sweeps down to the lower working surfaces to add another dimension to the space. The back of the curved breakfast bar was wrapped in a flexible stone veneer that complimented the concrete cabinet doors.
I designed a circular ceiling feature that mirrored the radius of the kitchen. This allowed us to get both task and ambient lighting into the space. We also put ambient lighting under the breakfast bar on at plinth level, to allow a variation in the type of lighting used at any one time.
