German Handleless Kitchen in Weetwood, Leeds
A LIGHT, AIRY, OPEN PLAN SPACE WITH MORE THAN ENOUGH STORAGE, WORK SURFACE AND FLOOR SPACE LEFT OVER FOR A DINING AREA.
Customer Requirements
Our clients had planned a large, lantern roofed feature, orangery style extension and wished to create a very large living space by combining it with the original kitchen, dining room and rear lounge.
When removing dividing walls, steels have to be inserted to provide adequate support for load-bearing walls and floor joists upstairs. The ‘structural remains’ always pose a challenge to any design, often leaving supporting steels in the most challenging of positions, such was the case here.
Having prepared various design options in different zones of the newly created space, our clients settled on the option which provided the best sociable-functional orientation, whilst leaving future flexibility for positioning dining and living areas.
The tall bank incorporates and conceals a vertical steel, required to support a chimney breast and the curved recess for the American fridge/freezer visually softened a large supporting pier and helped absorb the impact of such an imposing appliance.
Pale gloss doors were selected for the taller units to lessen their visual impact and the wood finished island helped it blend with the flooring choice.
A bespoke boxing had to be created to accommodate the ceiling hood, when an additional steel, not previously shown on any plans, was introduced by the structural engineer.
This was a large kitchen brought-in on a strict, almost trade budget, using German made units, Star Galaxy granite and Siemens appliances
